My thoughts about Iphone 4 and Android mobiles

I am close to buying a new smart phone and a debate has started to take place in my head, Iphone or an Android phone. My previous phone, a Samsung Omnia HD or I8910 features the Symbian OS. Now that I know this OS I want to try something new. I have been reading a lot about Iphone and Android and I am currently leaning against Android and especially the HTC Desire.

The positive things about Android seems to be that you have a lot more options regarding most thing in the mobile, whereas Apple controls almost everything. The things you are allowed to do works very well on the Iphone but at the same time you are very limited to what you can do. I like the 7 start screens of HTC and their Sense that lies on top of the Android 2.2 OS. On these 7 start screens you can put different Widgets that update dynamically. For example your Facebook, Twitter and other social networks can update on your start screen and you can even post there so you do not need to launch a browser window. Apple doesn’t feature this and at most you get a number that shows you have a new post/mail.

The downside with Android seems to be that their appstore is a jungle and without any approval system like Apple has you do not always know what you are going to get. Android market has around 230.000 apps and Apple has 400.000, but Android is closing in fast. Previously good games where sparse on Android but now more and more high profile games find their way to the Android market, like Angry Birds and Cut the Rope.

Apple and their Iphone has a very streamlined experience and the markets best UI. The downside is that it starts to be somewhat old fashioned. For example unsent SMS that for some reason does not get sent you have to manually send them, whereas other phones do that automatically. Apple now has multi tasking, but again Apple controls what programs can multi task so it is not real multi tasking, only steaming apps like Spootify are allowed to multi task.

What finally made up my mind is the freedom Android gives me. I do not need to rely on Itunes for syncing the phone, I can tailor my OS and get social network updates on my start screens.  So what do you people think, Apple IOS 4 or Android based mobiles?

Sony NGP aka PSP2

Sony has finally revealed its successor to the PSP, the  Playstation NGP (next generation portable) and features a ton of new control inputs and raw horse power.

The device has a 5-inch touch sensitive OLED display, two analog thumb sticks, 3G, motion sensors and even a touch pad on its back as big as the screen. It has a front and back camera (resolution unknown). It features both a quad core CPU (ARM CortexTM-A9 core) and a quad core GPU (SGX543MP4+) and the graphics are close to PS3 standards. The display boosts a 960×544 pixel resolution and the device uses flash based memory for its games. The NGP also has GPS, a three axis compass and support for Bluetooth and WiFI. It is quite a big console to carry with you, measuring 182.0 x 18.6 x 83.5mm (width x height x depth).

At todays event in Japan Sony showed realtime demonstrations of Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted and Killzone. The big reveal was that Call of Duty comes to the console and will make use of the twin analoge thumb sticks. The NGP will release this holiday and take on the battle with Nintendo 3DS. No price has been set but I guess that it will be in the 250-350$ range. Some reports has indicated that the battery life will be between 3-5 hours, just like the original PSP.

More information when reveled.

Nintendo 3DS got a release date !

The Nintendo 3DS finally got its release date yesterday in a press event in Amsterdam. The new hand held will release in Europe on March 25 and in US on March 27. The recommended retail price will be 249$ for the US market and around 250 Euro in Europe. Nintendo hasnt revealed the exact launch games but they showed possible candidates in this trailer that you can check here at GameTrailers.com. I am personally going to buy Super Street Fighter IV 3D, which seems like the best pick.

There will be a choice of two colors, Cosmo black and Aqua blue. The system will have some interesting built in features, like games, audio/video editor,  Activity log that counts how many steps you take daily and converts that into coins that you can use for in game rewards. It will also have a Internet browser and a shop where you can buy old Game Boy games and also download game demos and 3D movie trailers. The system can multi task which means that if you get stuck in Zelda you can press the home button, use the web browser to find a guide and then return to the game seamlessly.

Nintendo also improved the friend code system. Before you had to enter a long code for every game you wanted to play online against a friend, now it is down to one code per system, so if not perfect at least they improved it.

Two months to go then I will give you the glorious unboxing  photos and impressions of the system. Now lets hope for some great games!
